718 – Laser Hazards – Nonionizing Radiation for Competent Person

Laser and nonionizing radiation safety training covering hazard recognition, laser classifications, beam and non-beam hazards, eye and skin protection, controlled areas, warning signs, engineering and administrative controls, PPE, and safe work practices.

Designed for personnel working with or around laser systems and individuals who may be assigned workplace safety oversight or competent person responsibilities.

Completion of this training does not, by itself, designate or certify an individual as a Competent Person, Qualified Person, or Laser Safety Officer. Employer designation and applicable specialized qualifications remain the responsibility of the employer.

Description

This training provides instruction in the recognition, evaluation, and control of hazards associated with lasers and nonionizing radiation in construction and workplace environments.

The course addresses fundamental laser safety principles, sources of nonionizing radiation, potential eye and skin hazards, laser classifications, beam and non-beam hazards, exposure prevention, controlled areas, warning signs, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Participants will receive instruction on recognizing direct-beam, reflected-beam, and scattered-radiation hazards; controlling access to laser-use areas; maintaining appropriate beam paths and barriers; understanding equipment labels and warning information; and following manufacturer instructions and employer safety procedures.

The training also addresses associated hazards that may accompany laser operations, including electrical hazards, fire hazards, hazardous materials, compressed gases, fumes, airborne contaminants, and other equipment-related hazards where applicable.

Appropriate control measures may include engineering controls, protective housings, barriers, interlocks, beam stops, restricted-access areas, administrative procedures, warning signs and labels, and properly selected laser protective eyewear when required.

Individuals assigned safety oversight or competent person responsibilities should understand how to recognize existing and predictable hazards associated with laser and nonionizing radiation activities within the scope of their assigned duties and how to initiate appropriate corrective measures in accordance with employer procedures and their assigned authority.

Applicable requirements may include OSHA requirements addressing nonionizing radiation, personal protective equipment, electrical safety, hazard communication, and other standards applicable to the specific workplace and equipment. Recognized laser-safety practices and applicable consensus standards should also be considered based on the laser system and work activity.

This training is intended to supplement, not replace, manufacturer instructions, equipment-specific training, employer laser-safety procedures, site-specific hazard assessments, required protective measures, or any specialized training or qualification required for the laser system being used.

Completion of this course does not, by itself, designate or certify an individual as a Competent Person, Qualified Person, or Laser Safety Officer. Employer designation and any specialized qualification must be based on applicable requirements and the individual’s training, knowledge, experience, responsibilities, and authority.
