Description

This training provides instruction in hazard communication and the recognition, evaluation, and communication of chemical hazards that may be encountered in construction and workplace environments.

The course addresses the fundamental elements of a workplace Hazard Communication Program, including hazardous chemical identification, chemical inventories, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), workplace labeling, shipped-container labels, pictograms, signal words, hazard statements, precautionary statements, and employee information and training.

Participants will receive instruction on physical and health hazards, routes of exposure, acute and chronic health effects, combustible and flammable materials, corrosives, toxic substances, compressed gases, oxidizers, and other hazardous chemicals that may be present in the workplace.

The training also addresses methods for obtaining and interpreting Safety Data Sheets, understanding the standardized 16-section SDS format, recognizing GHS-aligned hazard information, proper chemical labeling, secondary container requirements, personal protective equipment (PPE), safe handling and storage practices, spill and emergency considerations, and methods used to reduce employee exposure.

Individuals assigned competent person responsibilities should understand how to recognize existing and predictable chemical hazards within the scope of their assigned duties and how to implement or initiate appropriate corrective measures in accordance with employer procedures and their assigned authority.

Applicable requirements may include OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200, and the construction-industry provisions of 29 CFR 1926.59, as applicable.

This training is intended to supplement, not replace, the employer’s written Hazard Communication Program, workplace-specific chemical inventory, Safety Data Sheets, labeling system, site-specific training, or other applicable regulatory requirements.

Completion of this course does not, by itself, designate or certify an individual as a Competent Person or Qualified Person. Competent Person designation is the responsibility of the employer and must be based on the individual’s knowledge, training, experience, assigned responsibilities, and authority to take prompt corrective measures.
