Description
This training provides instruction in the recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards requiring the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in construction and other workplace environments.
The course addresses the role of PPE as part of an overall hazard-control strategy and emphasizes that PPE should be selected based on the hazards associated with the work being performed, employee exposure, applicable regulatory requirements, and employer procedures.
Participants will receive instruction on hazard recognition, PPE selection, proper use, inspection, limitations, care, maintenance, storage, and replacement. Training topics may include head protection, eye and face protection, hearing protection, hand protection, foot protection, high-visibility apparel, protective clothing, respiratory protection, and other specialized protective equipment as applicable to the work activity.
The training also addresses proper fit, compatibility when multiple types of PPE are worn together, manufacturer instructions, damaged or defective PPE, employee responsibilities, sanitation, and the importance of maintaining protective equipment in a safe and reliable condition.
Participants should understand that PPE does not eliminate the underlying hazard. Engineering controls, administrative controls, safe work practices, and other protective measures should be implemented as appropriate, with PPE used as required to protect employees from remaining hazards.
Individuals assigned competent person or safety oversight responsibilities should be capable of recognizing existing and predictable hazards within the scope of their assigned duties, identifying situations requiring appropriate protective measures, and initiating corrective action in accordance with employer procedures and their assigned authority.
Applicable construction requirements may include OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart E – Personal Protective and Life Saving Equipment, including requirements applicable to personal protective equipment, occupational noise exposure, hearing protection, eye and face protection, respiratory protection, and head protection based on the hazards and work activities involved.
Additional PPE requirements may apply under other OSHA standards, equipment-specific requirements, manufacturer instructions, project specifications, or recognized consensus standards depending on the work being performed.
This training is intended to supplement, not replace, the employer’s hazard assessment, PPE program, site-specific procedures, required respiratory protection program and medical evaluation where applicable, equipment-specific training, manufacturer instructions, or other applicable regulatory requirements.
Completion of this course does not, by itself, designate or certify an individual as a Competent Person or Qualified Person. Competent Person designation is the responsibility of the employer and must be based on the individual’s knowledge, training, experience, assigned responsibilities, and authority to take prompt corrective measures.
