708 – Electrical Safety for Competent Person

Electrical safety training covering hazard recognition, electric shock and electrocution prevention, grounding, GFCI protection, temporary wiring, flexible cords, electrical equipment inspections, energized parts, safe work practices, and electrical protective measures.

Designed for personnel who work with or around electrical hazards and individuals who may be assigned competent person responsibilities.

Completion of this training does not, by itself, designate an individual as a Competent Person or Qualified Person. Appropriate employer designation, authorization, training, knowledge, and demonstrated ability are required.

Description

This training provides electrical safety instruction for personnel who work with or around electrical systems, equipment, tools, and installations, including individuals who may be assigned responsibilities associated with competent person duties.

The course addresses common electrical hazards encountered in construction and general industry, including electric shock, electrocution, arc flash, arc blast, burns, damaged electrical equipment, improper grounding, exposed energized parts, temporary wiring, extension cords, and other electrical hazards.

Topics may include electrical hazard recognition, safe work practices, grounding and bonding, Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs), assured equipment grounding considerations, temporary electrical installations, flexible cords and cables, electrical protective equipment, guarding of live parts, approach considerations, de-energization, lockout/tagout awareness, and inspection of electrical equipment and tools.

Participants will receive instruction on recognizing existing and predictable electrical hazards, identifying unsafe conditions, understanding appropriate protective measures, and supporting corrective actions necessary to maintain a safe workplace.

This training is intended to supplement, not replace, an employer’s site-specific electrical safety program, policies, procedures, qualified-person requirements, equipment-specific training, or other training required for assigned electrical work.

Completion of this course does not, by itself, designate an individual as a Competent Person or Qualified Person. Employer designation, authorization, training, knowledge, and demonstrated ability must be appropriate to the individual’s assigned duties.

Applicable requirements may include OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart K – Electrical, OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S – Electrical, and other applicable electrical safety requirements.
