600 – Hot Work Safety (Construction Industry)

Hot Work Safety training for construction personnel involved in or exposed to welding, cutting, brazing, grinding, heating, and other spark- or heat-producing operations.

Topics include hot work hazard recognition, fire prevention, hot work permits, fire watch responsibilities, compressed gas cylinders, welding and cutting equipment, ventilation, fumes and gases, PPE, combustible materials, confined or enclosed spaces, and emergency procedures.

Training addresses applicable OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart J requirements for welding and cutting operations.

Completion of this training does not, by itself, authorize an individual to perform hot work or serve as a fire watch. Employer-specific authorization, procedures, and additional training may be required.

Description

This training provides instruction on the recognition, evaluation, and control of hazards associated with hot work operations in the construction industry.

Hot work activities may include welding, cutting, brazing, soldering, grinding, heating, torch-applied operations, and other work capable of producing flames, sparks, heat, or other ignition sources.

The course addresses common hot work hazards including fire and explosion hazards, combustible and flammable materials, compressed gas cylinders, oxygen and fuel-gas equipment, welding and cutting equipment, electrical hazards, sparks and hot slag, toxic fumes and gases, ultraviolet and infrared radiation, burns, ventilation, confined or enclosed spaces, and exposure to hazardous coatings and metals.

Training topics may include:

• Hot work hazard recognition and assessment
• Welding, cutting, brazing, grinding, and heating operations
• Fire prevention and control measures
• Removal or protection of combustible materials
• Hot work permits and authorization procedures
• Fire watch responsibilities
• Fire extinguishing equipment
• Oxygen and fuel-gas cylinder handling and storage
• Inspection of hoses, regulators, torches, cables, and equipment
• Arc welding and cutting safety
• Ventilation and control of welding fumes and gases
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Eye, face, hand, body, and respiratory protection
• Protection of nearby employees from sparks and arc radiation
• Work in confined or enclosed spaces
• Emergency procedures and incident prevention
• Post-work inspection and fire monitoring

Particular attention is given to fire prevention. Before hot work begins, the work area should be evaluated for combustible materials, flammable substances, hazardous atmospheres, and conditions that could allow sparks, heat, or molten material to create a fire or explosion hazard.

Where normal fire prevention precautions are not sufficient, appropriate additional precautions may include relocating or protecting combustible materials, using fire-resistant barriers or screens, providing suitable fire-extinguishing equipment, and assigning properly instructed fire-watch personnel as required.

Applicable construction requirements include OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart J – Welding and Cutting, including 1926.350 Gas Welding and Cutting, 1926.351 Arc Welding and Cutting, 1926.352 Fire Prevention, 1926.353 Ventilation and Protection in Welding, Cutting, and Heating, and 1926.354 Welding, Cutting, and Heating in Way of Preservative Coatings.

Additional OSHA requirements may apply depending on the work activity, materials, equipment, atmospheric conditions, location, and employee exposures.

This training is intended to supplement, not replace, the employer’s site-specific hot work program, fire prevention procedures, permit requirements, hazard assessments, equipment-specific training, manufacturer instructions, respiratory protection requirements, or other applicable safety procedures.

Completion of this course does not, by itself, authorize an individual to perform hot work, serve as a fire watch, or satisfy employer-specific qualification or authorization requirements. Employers remain responsible for determining employee competency, providing required task-specific training, and authorizing employees for assigned hot work activities.
