Description

This training provides instruction in the recognition, evaluation, and control of hazards associated with signs, signals, barricades, warning devices, and temporary traffic-control measures used in construction and workplace environments.

The course addresses the purpose and proper application of accident-prevention signs, tags, signals, barricades, warning devices, and other methods used to communicate hazards, restrict access, control movement, and protect employees and the public from hazardous conditions.

Participants will receive instruction on recognizing and understanding danger signs, caution signs, safety instruction signs, directional signs, traffic signs, tags, barricades, warning devices, and other visual or communication systems used to identify hazards and establish controlled work areas.

Training topics may include sign and tag visibility, placement and maintenance, barricade selection and positioning, restricted-access areas, hazard zones, pedestrian and vehicle considerations, work-zone communication, signaling methods, flagger considerations, and maintaining effective warning systems as workplace conditions change.

The training also addresses the importance of inspecting signs, signals, barricades, and warning devices to ensure they remain visible, legible, properly positioned, appropriate for the hazard, and maintained in effective condition.

Where construction activities affect public or construction traffic, applicable temporary traffic-control requirements, project specifications, and the current applicable edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) should be considered along with applicable state and local requirements.

Individuals assigned competent person or safety oversight responsibilities should be capable of recognizing existing and predictable hazards within the scope of their assigned duties and determining when signs, signals, barricades, restricted-access controls, or other protective measures are necessary in accordance with employer procedures and their assigned authority.

Applicable construction requirements may include OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart G – Signs, Signals, and Barricades, including applicable provisions of 29 CFR 1926.200 through 1926.203.

This training is intended to supplement, not replace, employer-specific safety procedures, project-specific traffic-control plans, site-specific hazard assessments, required flagger or traffic-control qualifications, MUTCD requirements where applicable, or state and local traffic-control requirements.

Completion of this training does not, by itself, designate or certify an individual as a Competent Person, Qualified Person, certified flagger, or traffic-control supervisor. Employer designation and any applicable state, local, project, or task-specific qualifications remain required.
