722 – Materials Handling and Storage for Competent Person

Materials handling and storage safety training covering hazard recognition, manual and mechanical material handling, stacking, storage, load stability, falling and shifting materials, struck-by and caught-between hazards, housekeeping, PPE, and safe work practices.

Designed for construction personnel and individuals who may be assigned competent person or safety oversight responsibilities involving the handling, movement, storage, and disposal of materials.

Completion of this training does not, by itself, designate or certify an individual as a Competent Person, Qualified Person, equipment operator, or qualified rigger. Employer designation and applicable qualifications are required.

Description

This training provides instruction in the recognition, evaluation, and control of hazards associated with the handling, movement, storage, stacking, and disposal of materials in construction and workplace environments.

The course addresses common material-handling hazards, including improper lifting and carrying, unstable or improperly stacked materials, falling or shifting loads, struck-by and caught-between hazards, pinch points, overloaded storage areas, obstructed access routes, and unsafe interaction between employees and material-handling equipment.

Participants will receive instruction on safe methods for moving, handling, stacking, storing, securing, and retrieving materials. Training topics may include load stability, storage capacity, stacking practices, housekeeping, aisles and passageways, material placement, access and egress, manual material handling, mechanical handling, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

The training also addresses hazards associated with lumber, structural materials, pipes, drums, containers, bagged materials, pallets, scrap materials, and other materials commonly encountered on construction sites and in workplace storage areas.

Where mechanical equipment is used to move materials, employees should understand the importance of maintaining safe distances, controlling access to operating areas, avoiding suspended or unstable loads, recognizing equipment blind spots, and coordinating activities with authorized equipment operators.

Materials must be stored in a manner that does not create hazards from collapse, sliding, falling, displacement, fire, blocked exits, or interference with emergency equipment, walkways, or work operations. Damaged, unstable, or improperly stored materials should be corrected in accordance with employer procedures.

Individuals assigned competent person or safety oversight responsibilities should be capable of recognizing existing and predictable material-handling and storage hazards within the scope of their assigned duties and understand the corrective measures necessary to address unsafe conditions in accordance with employer procedures and their assigned authority.

Applicable construction requirements may include OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart H – Materials Handling, Storage, Use, and Disposal, including applicable requirements for material storage, rigging equipment, and disposal practices based on the work activity being performed.

This training is intended to supplement, not replace, employer-specific material-handling procedures, equipment-specific operator training, manufacturer instructions, site-specific lifting or storage plans, required rigging qualifications, or other applicable regulatory requirements.

Completion of this course does not, by itself, designate or certify an individual as a Competent Person, Qualified Person, equipment operator, or qualified rigger. Employer designation, authorization, applicable training, knowledge, experience, and appropriate authority must be consistent with the individual’s assigned responsibilities.
