709 – Crane Safety for Competent Person

Crane safety training covering hazard recognition, crane setup and work areas, ground conditions, suspended loads, power-line hazards, swing radius hazards, equipment inspections, signaling, rigging awareness, load handling, and safe lifting practices.

Designed for personnel who work with or around crane operations and individuals who may be assigned competent person responsibilities.

Completion of this training does not, by itself, designate an individual as a Competent Person, crane operator, Qualified Person, signal person, or qualified rigger. Appropriate employer designation, qualifications, certifications, training, knowledge, experience, and demonstrated ability may be required based on assigned duties.

Description

This training provides crane safety instruction for personnel who work with or around cranes and lifting operations, including individuals who may be assigned responsibilities associated with competent person duties.

The course addresses common hazards associated with crane operations, including struck-by and caught-between hazards, suspended loads, load handling, crane setup, ground conditions, power-line hazards, swing radius hazards, access and work-area control, equipment inspections, signaling, rigging awareness, and safe lifting practices.

Topics may include crane hazard recognition, pre-operation and work-area inspections, ground conditions, equipment setup, operational considerations, load control, working around suspended loads, fall and access hazards, power-line safety, signal person requirements, basic rigging considerations, operator qualifications and certifications, and responsibilities of personnel involved in crane operations.

Participants will receive instruction on recognizing existing and predictable hazards associated with crane operations, identifying unsafe conditions, understanding appropriate protective measures, and supporting corrective actions necessary to maintain safe lifting operations.

This training is intended to supplement, not replace, an employer’s site-specific crane safety program, manufacturer instructions, equipment-specific training, operator certification or qualification requirements, signal person qualification, rigging qualification, inspections, or other training and authorization required for assigned duties.

Completion of this course does not, by itself, designate an individual as a Competent Person, Qualified Person, crane operator, signal person, or qualified rigger. Employer designation, applicable qualifications or certifications, training, knowledge, experience, and demonstrated ability must be appropriate to the individual’s assigned responsibilities.

Applicable requirements may include OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC – Cranes and Derricks in Construction and other applicable OSHA requirements, manufacturer instructions, and workplace safety procedures.
