This training provides chemical hazard and toxic substance safety instruction for personnel working in general industry environments, including individuals who may be assigned responsibilities associated with competent person duties.
The course addresses the recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards involving chemicals and toxic substances. Topics may include routes of exposure, health effects, occupational exposure limits, hazardous chemicals, toxic substances, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), chemical labeling, the Hazard Communication Standard, personal protective equipment (PPE), engineering and administrative controls, safe handling and storage, spill prevention, and emergency response considerations.
Participants will receive instruction on identifying chemical hazards, reviewing labels and Safety Data Sheets, recognizing signs and symptoms of exposure, evaluating workplace conditions, selecting appropriate protective measures, maintaining proper chemical storage and segregation, and supporting corrective actions when hazardous conditions are identified.
The training may also address respiratory hazards, ventilation, exposure monitoring awareness, emergency procedures, chemical spills and releases, decontamination considerations, and the importance of following employer-specific chemical safety procedures.
This training is intended to supplement, not replace, an employer’s site-specific Hazard Communication Program, chemical hygiene or exposure-control procedures, respiratory protection program, emergency response procedures, Safety Data Sheets, manufacturer instructions, or specialized training required for specific hazardous substances.
Completion of this course does not, by itself, designate an individual as a Competent Person, Qualified Person, hazardous materials technician, emergency responder, or other specialized role. Employer designation, authorization, training, knowledge, experience, and demonstrated ability must be appropriate to the individual’s assigned responsibilities.
Applicable requirements may include OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200 – Hazard Communication, 29 CFR 1910 Subpart Z – Toxic and Hazardous Substances, and other applicable general industry safety and health requirements.
