Excavation & Trenching Safety Awareness Training
The Excavation & Trenching Safety Awareness Training program provides employees with essential knowledge for recognizing and avoiding hazards associated with excavation and trenching operations.
This course is designed for employees who work in, around, or near excavations and trenches and focuses on hazard recognition, safe work practices, protective systems awareness, access and egress, mobile equipment hazards, underground utilities, hazardous atmospheres, water accumulation, and other common excavation hazards.
Program Objectives
Upon successful completion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Recognize common excavation and trenching hazards.
- Understand the potential consequences of cave-ins and soil instability.
- Recognize basic soil and excavation conditions that may affect worker safety.
- Understand the purpose of sloping, benching, shoring, shielding, and other protective systems.
- Recognize safe access and egress requirements.
- Understand hazards associated with underground utilities.
- Recognize hazards created by excavated materials and spoil piles.
- Recognize mobile equipment, struck-by, and falling-load hazards.
- Understand hazards associated with water accumulation.
- Recognize potential hazardous atmosphere conditions.
- Understand basic requirements for working near vehicular traffic.
- Recognize the importance of daily excavation inspections.
- Understand the role of the designated Competent Person.
- Recognize changing conditions that should be reported immediately.
- Understand employee responsibilities when working in or around excavations and trenches.

This training addresses applicable excavation and trenching safety principles associated with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P – Excavations, including applicable requirements of 29 CFR 1926.650, 1926.651, 1926.652, and related appendices.

Certificate of Training
Participants who successfully complete the applicable training requirements and required assessments may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training.
Important Notice
This course provides excavation and trenching safety awareness training and does not by itself designate or qualify a participant as the employer’s Competent Person. Employers remain responsible for designating a Competent Person who possesses the required knowledge and ability to identify existing and predictable hazards and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures. Employers are also responsible for site-specific hazard assessment, employee instruction, protective systems, inspections, and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
