Permit-Required Confined Space Entry Safety Training

The Permit-Required Confined Space Entry Safety Training program provides comprehensive safety training for employees, supervisors, competent persons, entry supervisors, authorized entrants, attendants, contractors, and other personnel involved in confined space entry operations.

The program focuses on confined space hazard recognition, permit-required confined space requirements, atmospheric hazards, testing and monitoring, hazard control, ventilation, isolation, entry procedures, assigned employee responsibilities, communication, personal protective equipment, and emergency procedures.

Program Objectives

Upon successful completion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Recognize confined spaces and permit-required confined spaces.
• Identify common physical and atmospheric hazards associated with confined spaces.
• Understand the basic requirements of a permit-required confined space program.
• Recognize oxygen-deficient, oxygen-enriched, flammable, and toxic atmospheres.
• Understand atmospheric testing and monitoring principles.
• Recognize ventilation and other hazard-control methods.
• Understand isolation, lockout/tagout, and control of hazardous energy associated with confined space entry.
• Understand the purpose and use of confined space entry permits.
• Recognize the duties of authorized entrants.
• Recognize the duties of attendants.
• Recognize the responsibilities of entry supervisors.
• Understand communication requirements during entry operations.
• Recognize appropriate personal protective equipment and entry equipment.
• Understand procedures for preventing unauthorized entry.
• Recognize conditions requiring evacuation or termination of an entry.
• Understand emergency, retrieval, and rescue planning requirements.
• Apply safe work practices during confined space entry operations.

Regulatory References

This training addresses permit-required confined space safety concepts associated with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA — Confined Spaces in Construction and, where applicable to General Industry operations, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 — Permit-Required Confined Spaces.

Certificate of Training

Participants who successfully complete the applicable training requirements and required assessments may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training.

Employer Responsibilities

Employers remain responsible for evaluating workplace confined spaces, identifying permit-required confined spaces, controlling hazards, establishing applicable entry procedures, assigning employee roles, providing required equipment, coordinating entry operations, and ensuring employees receive training appropriate to their assigned duties and workplace conditions.

Rescue & Emergency Planning

This course addresses confined space rescue and emergency planning awareness as it relates to safe entry operations. It does not by itself qualify a participant as a confined space rescue team member. Specialized confined space rescue training, practical exercises, equipment competency, and applicable evaluations are addressed separately.
