1529 – Industrial Tow Tractor / Tug Operator Safety Training
A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides Industrial Tow Tractor / Tug Operator Safety Training designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely operate powered tow tractors, industrial tugs, burden carriers, and similar equipment used to move carts, trailers, materials, supplies, and equipment in industrial and workplace environments.
This training program addresses equipment familiarization, pre-operation inspection, towing capacity, trailer and cart connections, load securement, stability, steering and braking, pedestrian interaction, workplace traffic, battery or fuel systems, manufacturer requirements, and operator responsibilities. Practical operator evaluation may be provided when applicable and when suitable equipment is available.

Training Discipline: Industrial Mobile Equipment & Material Handling Safety
Equipment: Industrial Tow Tractor / Powered Tug / Burden Carrier / Tow Vehicle, as Applicable
Training Format: Instructor-led classroom and/or online instruction with practical equipment training and operator evaluation as applicable.
Practical Training: When provided as part of operator qualification, hands-on training should address the specific tow tractor or tug, controls, steering and braking characteristics, hitch and coupling systems, rated towing capacity, carts or trailers, battery or fuel system, workplace travel routes, operating limitations, and hazards associated with the equipment the participant is expected to operate.
Operator Evaluation: Practical evaluation, when required by the employer, project, manufacturer instructions, or applicable requirements, should be performed using equipment representative of the type the participant will operate and under representative workplace conditions.
Towing Capacity Notice: Operators should follow manufacturer-rated towing capacities and limitations for the tow vehicle, hitch, carts, trailers, and related components. Loads should be appropriately distributed and secured, and the towing configuration should not exceed applicable equipment limitations.
Coupling Safety Notice: Hitching and unhitching carts or trailers can expose workers to crushing and pinch-point hazards. Equipment should be secured against unintended movement, and personnel should keep clear of hazardous areas during connection and disconnection.
Pedestrian Safety Notice: Industrial tow tractors and tugs may operate in areas shared with pedestrians and other mobile equipment. Operators should maintain appropriate travel speed, visibility, clearance, and communication and follow workplace traffic-control procedures.
Passenger Notice: Personnel should not ride on tow tractors, tugs, carts, trailers, or loads unless the equipment is specifically designed by the manufacturer for passenger transportation and the employer permits such use.
Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of this A.R.G. training program does not by itself authorize an individual to operate an industrial tow tractor or tug. Employers remain responsible for determining applicable regulatory requirements and ensuring operators receive equipment-specific instruction, practical training, evaluation, familiarization, authorization, and supervision appropriate to the equipment and workplace.
Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Industrial Tow Tractor / Tug Operator Safety Training program.
The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as a governmental operator license or governmental certification.
