Confined Space Rescue Training
The Confined Space Rescue Training program provides specialized training for personnel who may be assigned responsibilities associated with confined space emergency response, retrieval, and rescue operations.
The program focuses on confined space rescue hazards, rescue planning, atmospheric hazards, rescue equipment, retrieval systems, personal protective equipment, communication, non-entry rescue, entry rescue considerations, victim removal, and practical rescue procedures appropriate to the participant’s assigned responsibilities.
Program Objectives
Upon successful completion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Recognize hazards associated with confined space rescue operations.
- Understand the differences between non-entry rescue and entry rescue.
- Recognize atmospheric, physical, mechanical, electrical, and engulfment hazards.
- Understand atmospheric testing and continuous monitoring considerations during rescue operations.
- Recognize the importance of ventilation and hazard control before and during rescue activities.
- Understand isolation and hazardous energy control considerations.
- Recognize appropriate personal protective equipment for confined space rescue operations.
- Identify basic components of retrieval and rescue systems.
- Understand the use of tripods, davit systems, winches, lifelines, and retrieval equipment as applicable.
- Recognize anchorage and rigging considerations associated with retrieval systems.
- Understand rescue team communication and coordination responsibilities.
- Recognize the roles of entrants, attendants, entry supervisors, and rescue personnel during an emergency.
- Understand procedures for non-entry retrieval when appropriate.
- Recognize hazards and additional requirements associated with entry rescue.
- Apply fundamental victim packaging, movement, and removal concepts.
- Understand the importance of preventing additional rescuers from becoming victims.
- Participate in applicable practical rescue exercises and simulations.
- Understand post-rescue accountability and incident documentation considerations.

This training addresses confined space rescue concepts associated with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA — Confined Spaces in Construction, including applicable rescue and emergency service requirements, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 — Permit-Required Confined Spaces where applicable to General Industry operations.
Practical Training & Rescue Exercises
Confined space rescue requires more than classroom awareness. Participants assigned rescue responsibilities must receive training appropriate to their assigned duties and must demonstrate applicable rescue skills using appropriate equipment and simulated or representative confined space conditions. Practical exercises, equipment use, and participant evaluations may therefore form part of this program based on the training scope provided.
Certificate of Training
Participants who successfully complete the applicable classroom instruction, practical training, exercises, and required assessments may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training.
Employer Responsibilities
Employers remain responsible for evaluating confined space hazards, developing appropriate emergency and rescue procedures, selecting and evaluating rescue services or rescue teams, providing necessary rescue equipment and personal protective equipment, ensuring employees are properly trained for their assigned duties, and conducting required rescue practice appropriate to the workplace and confined spaces involved.
Important Rescue Qualification Notice
Completion of this course alone does not automatically qualify an individual to perform every type of confined space rescue. Rescue capabilities must correspond to the hazards, configuration, equipment, conditions, and rescue procedures associated with the specific confined space and workplace. Additional equipment-specific, site-specific, medical, respiratory protection, technical rescue, or other training may be required depending on assigned duties and conditions.
