Excavation & Trenching Competent Person Refresher Training
The Excavation & Trenching Competent Person Refresher Training program is designed for supervisors, foremen, safety personnel, and other individuals who have previously completed excavation and trenching Competent Person training and need to refresh and reinforce their knowledge of excavation hazards, protective systems, inspections, and Competent Person responsibilities.
This refresher program reviews critical excavation and trenching safety principles and reinforces the knowledge necessary to recognize existing and predictable hazards, evaluate changing site conditions, and understand the corrective actions associated with the employer-designated Competent Person role.
Program Objectives
Upon successful completion of this refresher program, participants should be able to:
- Review the responsibilities and authority of an Excavation & Trenching Competent Person.
- Recognize existing and predictable excavation and trenching hazards.
- Review cave-in hazards and soil-instability conditions.
- Refresh knowledge of soil classification principles.
- Review visual and manual soil-analysis concepts.
- Evaluate conditions affecting protective-system selection.
- Review sloping and benching requirements and limitations.
- Review shoring, shielding, and trench-box applications.
- Evaluate safe access and egress conditions.
- Recognize underground utility and installation hazards.
- Evaluate spoil-pile and material-placement conditions.
- Recognize mobile equipment, falling-load, and struck-by hazards.
- Identify hazards associated with water accumulation.
- Recognize potential hazardous atmosphere conditions.
- Review excavation inspection responsibilities.
- Recognize changing conditions requiring additional inspection or corrective action.
- Understand when employees should be removed from hazardous conditions.
- Reinforce documentation and communication responsibilities.

Regulatory Reference
This refresher training addresses applicable excavation and trenching safety requirements and principles associated with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P – Excavations, including applicable provisions of 29 CFR 1926.650, 1926.651, 1926.652, and related appendices.

Training Format
Instructor-Led Refresher Training • Classroom and/or Approved Training Environment • English or Spanish
Case studies, inspection scenarios, soil-classification review, protective-system examples, and practical exercises may be incorporated when included within the applicable course delivery.
Certificate of Training
Participants who successfully complete the applicable refresher training requirements and required assessments may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training.
Employer Designation
Completion of this refresher training does not independently designate or continue an individual’s designation as an Excavation & Trenching Competent Person. The employer remains responsible for determining whether the individual possesses the knowledge, experience, capability, and authority necessary to perform assigned Competent Person duties.
When Refresher Training May Be Appropriate
Refresher or additional training may be appropriate when an employer identifies knowledge or performance deficiencies, workplace conditions or procedures change, different protective systems or equipment are introduced, regulatory requirements or company procedures change, or additional training is otherwise determined necessary by the employer.
