Excavation & Trenching Competent Person Training
The Excavation & Trenching Competent Person Training program provides advanced training for supervisors, foremen, safety personnel, and other individuals who may be assigned responsibilities associated with excavation and trenching operations.
This program focuses on hazard recognition, soil classification, protective systems, excavation inspections, changing site conditions, access and egress, underground installations, water accumulation, hazardous atmospheres, mobile equipment, and the responsibilities and authority associated with the Competent Person role.
Program Objectives
Upon successful completion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Understand applicable excavation and trenching requirements.
- Recognize existing and predictable excavation hazards.
- Identify conditions that may create cave-in or soil-instability hazards.
- Understand basic soil classification principles and testing methods.
- Recognize soil types and conditions affecting protective-system selection.
- Understand sloping and benching principles.
- Understand shoring and shielding protective systems.
- Recognize appropriate use and limitations of trench boxes and other protective systems.
- Evaluate safe access and egress arrangements.
- Recognize underground utility and installation hazards.
- Evaluate spoil-pile and material-placement hazards.
- Recognize mobile equipment, falling-load, and struck-by hazards.
- Recognize water accumulation and changing excavation conditions.
- Evaluate potential hazardous atmosphere conditions.
- Understand applicable atmospheric testing and protective measures.
- Conduct and document applicable excavation safety inspections.
- Recognize conditions requiring employees to be removed from the hazardous area.
- Understand the responsibilities and authority associated with the employer-designated Competent Person.

Regulatory Reference
This training addresses applicable requirements and safety principles associated with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P – Excavations, including 29 CFR 1926.650, 1926.651, 1926.652, and applicable appendices addressing soil classification, sloping, benching, timber shoring, and protective systems.
Competent Person Responsibilities
Under applicable OSHA excavation requirements, a Competent Person must be capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions that are hazardous, unsanitary, or dangerous to employees and must have authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them.
The Competent Person has important responsibilities related to excavation inspections and must evaluate applicable conditions before employees are exposed to excavation hazards and as conditions change.

Training Format
Instructor-Led Training • Classroom and/or Approved Training Environment • English or Spanish
Practical exercises, soil-classification demonstrations, protective-system examples, inspection scenarios, or other hands-on activities may be incorporated when included within the applicable course delivery.
Certificate of Training
Participants who successfully complete the applicable training requirements and required assessments may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training.
Employer Designation
Successful completion of this training documents completion of the A.R.G. training program. The participant’s employer remains responsible for determining whether the individual possesses the knowledge, experience, capability, and authority necessary to perform the specific Competent Person duties assigned by the employer.

Important Notice
Completion of this course does not by itself constitute employer designation as an Excavation & Trenching Competent Person. A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides training and may issue a Certificate of Training upon successful completion of applicable course requirements. The employer is responsible for designating its Competent Person and ensuring that the individual possesses the knowledge and ability to recognize applicable hazards and has authorization to take prompt corrective measures. Employers remain responsible for site-specific hazard assessment, protective-system selection, inspections, employee protection, and compliance with all applicable requirements.
