1534 – Side Loader Operator Safety Training
A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides Side Loader Operator Safety Training designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely operate powered side loaders used for handling long, bulky, or specialized materials in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, lumber operations, steel and pipe yards, distribution centers, and other material-handling environments.
This training program addresses equipment familiarization, pre-operation inspection, stability, rated capacity, load center, side-loading operations, long-load handling, visibility, pedestrian interaction, workplace traffic, battery or fuel systems, manufacturer requirements, and operator responsibilities. Practical training and operator performance evaluation may be provided when applicable and when suitable equipment is available.

Training Discipline: Powered Industrial Truck & Specialized Material Handling Safety
Equipment: Side Loader / Side-Loading Powered Industrial Truck, as Applicable
Training Format: Training may include formal instruction, demonstrations, practical equipment training, and evaluation of operator performance, as applicable.
Practical Training: Operator qualification should include practical training on the type of side loader the participant is expected to operate. Training should address the equipment’s controls, steering and braking characteristics, capacity, stability, side-loading system, forks, load platform, long-load handling, workplace conditions, and other operating characteristics.
Operator Evaluation: Where OSHA’s Powered Industrial Truck standard applies, operator training includes formal instruction, practical training, and evaluation of the operator’s performance in the workplace. Operator performance must also be evaluated at least once every three years, with refresher training required when specified conditions occur.
Long-Load Safety Notice: Long, oversized, or irregular loads can significantly affect equipment stability, visibility, turning clearance, load distribution, and pedestrian exposure. Operators should understand the dimensions and weight of the load and follow the equipment’s rated capacity, manufacturer limitations, and workplace procedures.
Powered Industrial Truck Notice: Side loaders may be subject to OSHA requirements applicable to powered industrial trucks. Classroom or online instruction alone should not be represented as completing operator qualification when practical training and workplace performance evaluation are required.
Pedestrian Safety Notice: Side loaders can create significant blind areas and may transport loads extending beyond the normal dimensions of the vehicle. Operators should maintain appropriate clearance, speed, visibility, communication, and separation from pedestrians and other equipment.
Equipment-Specific Training Notice: Side loader models may differ significantly in controls, steering, braking, capacity, mast configuration, side-loading mechanisms, power systems, and operating characteristics. Operators should receive instruction and familiarization appropriate to the specific equipment they are expected to operate.
Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of an A.R.G. classroom or knowledge-based training component does not by itself authorize an individual to operate a side loader. Employers remain responsible for ensuring applicable formal instruction, practical training, workplace evaluation, refresher training, equipment-specific familiarization, authorization, and documentation requirements are satisfied.
Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Side Loader Operator Safety Training program.
The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as an OSHA-issued card, governmental operator license, or governmental certification.
