A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides Material Handler Operator Safety Training designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely operate mobile material handlers used in recycling facilities, scrap yards, lumber operations, industrial facilities, ports, waste-management operations, construction sites, and other material-handling environments.

Mobile material handlers may be equipped with grapples, magnets, clamshell buckets, sorting attachments, or other manufacturer-approved tools. This training program addresses equipment familiarization, pre-operation inspection, stability, rated capacity, boom and attachment operation, material handling, swing-radius hazards, visibility, ground conditions, electrical hazards, pedestrian interaction, manufacturer requirements, and operator responsibilities.

Training Discipline: Mobile Material Handling & Heavy Equipment Safety

Equipment: Wheeled Material Handler / Tracked Material Handler / Scrap Handler / Recycling Material Handler, as Applicable

Training Format: Training may include formal instruction, demonstrations, practical equipment training, and evaluation of operator performance, as applicable.

Practical Training: Operator qualification should include practical training appropriate to the specific material handler the participant is expected to operate. Training should address controls, steering or travel systems, braking, boom functions, rotation, stability, attachments, material handling, visibility, workplace conditions, and other equipment-specific operating characteristics.

Capacity & Stability Notice: Material-handler capacity and stability can be affected by operating radius, boom position, attachment, load weight, material configuration, ground conditions, stabilizer position, equipment configuration, and other factors. Operators should follow the manufacturer’s capacity information and operating limitations applicable to the specific machine and attachment.

Swing-Radius Safety Notice: Rotation of the upper structure creates significant struck-by, caught-between, counterweight, and crushing hazards. Personnel should remain outside the equipment’s operating and swing-radius areas unless appropriate procedures and controls are established.

Attachment Safety Notice: Grapples, magnets, clamshells, sorting attachments, and other tools can change equipment capacity, stability, operating characteristics, and hazards. Operators should use attachments compatible with the machine and application and follow manufacturer instructions.

Material Handling Notice: Scrap, debris, lumber, recyclable material, and other irregular loads can shift, separate, fall, or contain hidden hazards. Operators should maintain appropriate separation from personnel and evaluate the material before lifting, moving, loading, or sorting it.

Power-Line Safety Notice: Material-handler booms and attachments can contact or enter hazardous proximity to energized electrical lines. Employers and operators should identify electrical hazards and comply with applicable clearance, planning, and protective requirements before beginning operations.

Suspended Load / Lifting Notice: Certain uses of material handlers may involve suspended loads or lifting configurations subject to additional requirements. This course does not constitute crane operator certification and should not be represented as satisfying every qualification, certification, rigging, or lifting requirement that may apply to a specific operation.

Equipment-Specific Training Notice: Material handlers vary significantly in controls, capacities, boom systems, stabilization systems, attachments, cab configurations, safety systems, and operating characteristics. Operators should receive instruction and familiarization appropriate to the specific make, model, configuration, and attachments they are expected to operate.

Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of an A.R.G. classroom or knowledge-based training component does not by itself authorize an individual to operate a material handler. Employers remain responsible for determining applicable requirements and ensuring equipment-specific instruction, practical training, evaluation, authorization, supervision, and documentation appropriate to the equipment, attachment, task, and workplace.

Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Material Handler Operator Safety Training program.

The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as an OSHA-issued credential, governmental operator license, crane operator certification, or governmental certification.
