Training Discipline: Heavy Equipment Operator Safety

Equipment: Mini Excavator / Compact Excavator

Training Format: Instructor-led classroom and/or online instruction with practical equipment training and operator evaluation as applicable.

Practical Training: When provided as part of operator qualification, hands-on training should address the specific equipment configuration, controls, attachments, operating characteristics, limitations, and hazards associated with the mini excavator the participant is expected to operate.

Operator Evaluation: Practical evaluation, when required by the employer, project, manufacturer instructions, or applicable requirements, should be performed using equipment representative of the type the participant will operate and under representative workplace conditions.

Utility Safety Notice: Mini excavators are frequently used in locations where underground utilities, overhead utilities, structures, workers, and other equipment may be nearby. Employers and operators must follow applicable utility-location, excavation, clearance, and site-control requirements before and during equipment operation.

Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of this A.R.G. training program does not by itself authorize an individual to operate a mini excavator. Employers remain responsible for ensuring operators are appropriately trained, familiarized, evaluated, authorized, and competent for the specific equipment, attachments, tasks, hazards, and workplace conditions involved.

Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Mini Excavator Operator Safety Training program.

The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as a governmental operator license.
