DOT HAZMAT Safety Training
This training program provides hazardous materials employees with safety and regulatory instruction related to the transportation of hazardous materials in commerce under the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), 49 CFR Parts 171–180.
The program is designed to support applicable HAZMAT employee training requirements under 49 CFR Part 172, Subpart H.

- Hazard classes and divisions
- Hazardous Materials Table awareness
- Shipping papers and emergency response information
- Packaging awareness

- Loading, unloading, and handling safety
- Safety procedures and emergency response information
- Measures to protect employees from hazardous materials exposures
- Methods and procedures for avoiding accidents
- Security awareness
- Function-specific requirements, as applicable
- Employee responsibilities when performing HAZMAT functions
Training Requirements:
Under 49 CFR 172.704, HAZMAT employee training must include general awareness/familiarization training, function-specific training, safety training, and security awareness training.
In-depth security training is also required for employees whose responsibilities involve a hazardous materials security plan when such a plan is required.
Additional modal-specific or driver training requirements may apply depending on the employee’s job functions and mode of transportation.
Initial and Recurrent Training:
New HAZMAT employees and employees who change job functions must complete required HAZMAT training within 90 days of employment or a change in job function. Before completing the required training, applicable HAZMAT functions may only be performed under the direct supervision of a properly trained and knowledgeable HAZMAT employee.
Recurrent HAZMAT training is required at least once every three years.
Important:
DOT HAZMAT training requirements are function-specific. The employer is responsible for determining the regulated functions performed by each HAZMAT employee and ensuring that the employee receives all training, testing, certification, and documentation required for those functions.
Completion of this course does not automatically qualify or authorize an employee to perform every HAZMAT transportation function. Additional function-specific, modal-specific, driver, security-plan, employer-specific, or material-specific training may be required.
