Skid Steer Operator Safety Training
This training program is designed to provide operators with safety instruction for the proper use and operation of skid steer loaders in construction, industrial, landscaping, and related work environments.
The training addresses equipment hazards, operator responsibilities, pre-operation inspections, safe operating practices, stability, load handling, attachments, pedestrian awareness, visibility, blind spots, rollover hazards, and other essential safety considerations.

- Operator responsibilities and safe work practices
- Skid steer components, controls, and safety features
- Pre-operation inspections
- Manufacturer instructions and operating limitations
- Work-area and ground-condition assessment
- Safe entry and exit procedures
- Seat belt and operator restraint use
- Starting, operating, and shutdown procedures
- Equipment stability and rollover prevention
- Load handling and carrying practices
- Bucket positioning and safe travel
- Lift-arm and crush-zone hazards
- Attachment selection and safe use
- Attachment changes and connection procedures
- Blind spots and pedestrian awareness
- Backing and reverse-operation hazards
- Operating on slopes, grades, and uneven terrain
- Overhead and surrounding hazards
- Parking and securing the equipment
- Hazard recognition and accident prevention
Applicable construction requirements may include OSHA 29 CFR 1926.602 – Material Handling Equipment and other provisions applicable to mechanized and earthmoving equipment.
OSHA requirements may vary depending on the design, configuration, attachments, and intended use of the skid steer. Certain skid steer configurations used as powered industrial trucks may be subject to additional operator training requirements.
Important: Completion of this training does not, by itself, authorize an individual to operate a skid steer loader.
Employers remain responsible for ensuring operators are properly trained, evaluated, and authorized for the specific machine, attachments, tasks, workplace conditions, and intended use involved.
Site-specific instruction, hands-on familiarization, practical evaluation, manufacturer requirements, attachment-specific training, and additional employer-specific training may also apply.
