A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides Yard Spotter / Terminal Tractor Operator Safety Training designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely operate yard tractors, terminal tractors, spotter trucks, yard goats, and similar vehicles used to move semi-trailers within warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, terminals, logistics yards, and other controlled workplace environments.

This training program addresses equipment familiarization, pre-operation inspection, trailer coupling and uncoupling, fifth-wheel systems, trailer positioning, backing, visibility, pedestrian interaction, dock operations, yard traffic, manufacturer requirements, and operator responsibilities. Practical training and operator performance evaluation may be provided when applicable and when suitable equipment is available.

Training Discipline: Yard Vehicle, Trailer Movement & Mobile Equipment Safety

Equipment: Yard Spotter / Terminal Tractor / Yard Tractor / Spotter Truck / Yard Goat, as Applicable

Training Format: Training may include formal instruction, demonstrations, practical equipment training, and evaluation of operator performance, as applicable.

Practical Training: Operator qualification should include practical training appropriate to the specific yard tractor or terminal tractor the participant is expected to operate. Training should address vehicle controls, steering and braking characteristics, fifth-wheel system, trailer coupling and uncoupling, backing, dock positioning, workplace traffic, operating limitations, and other equipment-specific hazards.

Operator Evaluation: Practical evaluation, when required by the employer, project, manufacturer instructions, or applicable requirements, should be performed using equipment representative of the type the participant will operate and under representative workplace conditions.

Coupling Safety Notice: Trailer coupling and uncoupling can expose operators and nearby personnel to crushing, pinch-point, trailer-movement, and struck-by hazards. Operators should verify proper fifth-wheel engagement and secure connections before moving a trailer and should follow manufacturer and employer procedures.

Backing Safety Notice: Yard spotters frequently operate in congested areas with trailers, loading docks, pedestrians, and other mobile equipment. Operators should maintain appropriate speed, visibility, clearance, and communication and use spotters or other controls when required by workplace conditions or employer procedures.

Dock Safety Notice: Trailer movement at loading docks can create serious hazards. Operators should coordinate trailer movement with dock personnel and follow applicable procedures involving trailer restraints, dock locks, wheel chocks, loading status, and other controls intended to prevent unintended or premature trailer movement.

On-Road Qualification Notice: This training is intended primarily for workplace yard and terminal operations. It does not replace a driver’s license, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), endorsement, medical qualification, or other credential that may be required when a vehicle or combination is operated on public roads or when otherwise required by applicable law.

Equipment-Specific Training Notice: Yard tractors and terminal tractors may differ significantly in controls, braking systems, fifth-wheel arrangements, hydraulic lifting systems, visibility, power systems, and operating characteristics. Operators should receive instruction and familiarization appropriate to the specific equipment they are expected to operate.

Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of this A.R.G. training program does not by itself authorize an individual to operate a yard spotter or terminal tractor. Employers remain responsible for determining applicable requirements and ensuring operators receive equipment-specific instruction, practical training, evaluation, authorization, and supervision appropriate to the equipment and workplace.

Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Yard Spotter / Terminal Tractor Operator Safety Training program.

The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as a CDL, driver’s license, governmental operator license, or governmental certification.
