Bloodborne Pathogens Safety Training
This training program provides workplace safety instruction regarding occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) and the protective measures used to help eliminate or minimize exposure.
The program addresses bloodborne pathogen hazards, exposure prevention, engineering and work practice controls, personal protective equipment, hepatitis B vaccination information, exposure incidents, post-exposure procedures, and other applicable workplace safety considerations.

- Overview of bloodborne pathogens and occupational exposure
- Applicable OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard – 29 CFR 1910.1030
- Blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM)
- Modes of transmission
- Exposure Control Plan
- Recognition of tasks and activities involving potential exposure
- Engineering and work practice controls
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Selection, use, removal, handling, and disposal of PPE
- Hand hygiene and contamination prevention
- Sharps and needlestick safety awareness
- Housekeeping, cleaning, and decontamination
- Regulated waste and biohazard labeling
- Hepatitis B vaccination information
- Emergency actions involving blood or OPIM
- Exposure incident reporting procedures
- Post-exposure evaluation and follow-up
- Training documentation and workplace responsibilities
Employer-Specific Information: Employers are responsible for providing applicable workplace-specific information, including the location and availability of the Exposure Control Plan, workplace procedures, PPE, reporting requirements, and procedures to follow following an exposure incident.
Important: Employees with occupational exposure must receive training in accordance with applicable OSHA requirements. Training requirements may include initial, annual, additional, and workplace-specific training depending on the employee’s duties and exposure.
