A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides Road Widener Operator Safety Training designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely operate road wideners and similar material-placement equipment used for roadway widening, shoulder construction, aggregate placement, asphalt placement, trench backfilling, road rehabilitation, and other applicable heavy-civil operations.

Road-widening operations can expose operators and ground personnel to moving equipment, traffic, limited visibility, conveyors, material discharge, pinch and crush points, hot asphalt, haul trucks, uneven terrain, roadway edges, utilities, hydraulic systems, and other hazards. This training program addresses equipment familiarization, pre-operation inspection, conveyor and attachment safety, material placement, truck interaction, work-zone traffic, equipment stability, hazardous-energy control, manufacturer requirements, and operator responsibilities.

Training Discipline: Road Widening, Material Placement & Heavy Equipment Safety

Equipment: Road Widener / Shoulder Widener / Material Placement Machine / Carrier-Mounted Material Placement Attachment, as Applicable

Training Format: Training may include formal instruction, demonstrations, practical equipment training, and evaluation of operator performance, as applicable.

Practical Training: Practical training should be appropriate to the specific road widener or material-placement equipment the participant is expected to operate. Training should address controls, steering, conveyors, hoppers, placement attachments, visibility, truck interaction, roadway edges, traffic conditions, and other equipment-specific operating characteristics.

Conveyor Safety Notice: Conveyor belts, rollers, pulleys, and drive systems can create severe caught-in, entanglement, pinch-point, and crushing hazards. Personnel should remain clear of moving components, and required guards and protective devices should remain properly installed and functional.

Roadway Edge & Stability Notice: Road wideners frequently operate close to roadway shoulders, ditches, embankments, excavations, and uneven surfaces. Operators should evaluate ground conditions, maintain appropriate clearance from edges, and operate within manufacturer limitations for slopes and stability.

Truck Interaction Notice: Dump trucks supplying material may operate immediately adjacent to road-widening equipment and ground personnel. Employers should establish appropriate communication, positioning, backing, traffic, and separation procedures for these operations.

Hot Material Notice: When hot asphalt or other heated materials are handled, employees can be exposed to burns and heated equipment surfaces. Appropriate procedures and personal protective equipment should be used for the material and operation.

Work-Zone Traffic Notice: Road-widening operations frequently occur adjacent to public or construction traffic. Appropriate temporary traffic controls, high-visibility apparel, equipment separation, communication, and site-specific procedures should be implemented as applicable.

Energy-Control Notice: Operators should not enter hazardous areas, remove guards, clear conveyor jams, clean dangerous moving components, or perform servicing unless the equipment has been appropriately shut down and hazardous energy controlled according to applicable procedures.

Equipment-Specific Training Notice: Road wideners vary significantly in carrier configuration, controls, conveyor systems, hoppers, placement attachments, dimensions, hydraulic systems, safety devices, and operating characteristics. Operators should receive instruction and familiarization appropriate to the specific equipment they are expected to operate.

Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of an A.R.G. classroom or knowledge-based training component does not by itself authorize an individual to operate a road widener. Employers remain responsible for determining applicable requirements and ensuring equipment-specific instruction, practical training, evaluation, authorization, supervision, protective equipment, work-zone controls, energy-control procedures, and documentation appropriate to the equipment, task, and workplace.

Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Road Widener Operator Safety Training program.

The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as an OSHA-issued credential, governmental operator license, or governmental certification.
