A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides Asphalt Paver Operator Safety Training designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely operate asphalt pavers and related paving equipment used in roadway construction, parking lots, highways, commercial projects, site development, resurfacing, and other applicable paving operations.

Asphalt paving operations can expose operators and ground personnel to moving equipment, hot asphalt, traffic, limited visibility, pinch and crush points, conveyors and augers, burns, fumes, uneven terrain, backing vehicles, overhead utilities, and other hazards. This training program addresses equipment familiarization, pre-operation inspection, safe paving operations, hopper and conveyor hazards, screed safety, hot-material exposure, work-zone traffic, communication, equipment stability, manufacturer requirements, and operator responsibilities.

Training Discipline: Asphalt Paving, Road Construction & Mobile Equipment Safety

Equipment: Asphalt Paver / Tracked Asphalt Paver / Wheeled Asphalt Paver / Highway or Commercial Paver, as Applicable

Training Format: Training may include formal instruction, demonstrations, practical equipment training, and evaluation of operator performance, as applicable.

Practical Training: Practical training should be appropriate to the specific asphalt paver the participant is expected to operate. Training should address controls, steering, braking, hopper systems, conveyors, augers, screed systems, visibility, truck interaction, work-zone conditions, and other equipment-specific operating characteristics.

Hot Asphalt Safety Notice: Asphalt paving operations can expose employees to hot asphalt, heated machine surfaces, and other sources of thermal injury. Operators and ground personnel should follow appropriate procedures for avoiding contact with hot materials and use suitable personal protective equipment for the task.

Conveyor & Auger Safety Notice: Paver conveyors, augers, shafts, chains, and related moving components can create severe caught-in, entanglement, crushing, and amputation hazards. Required guards should remain in place, and personnel should remain clear of moving components.

Truck Interaction Notice: Dump trucks supplying asphalt operate in close proximity to the paver and ground personnel. Employers should establish communication, positioning, backing, separation, and traffic procedures appropriate to truck-to-paver operations.

Screed Safety Notice: Screeds and screed extensions can create crushing, pinch-point, burn, and caught-between hazards. Personnel should maintain appropriate clearance and follow manufacturer procedures during adjustment, extension, raising, lowering, cleaning, and servicing.

Work-Zone Traffic Notice: Asphalt paving operations frequently occur adjacent to moving public or construction traffic. Appropriate traffic-control measures, high-visibility apparel, equipment separation, communication, and site-specific work-zone procedures should be implemented as applicable.

Energy-Control Notice: Operators should not enter hazardous areas, clear jams, remove guards, clean dangerous moving components, or perform servicing unless the equipment has been appropriately shut down and hazardous energy controlled according to applicable procedures.

Heat & Environmental Exposure Notice: Asphalt paving can involve high ambient temperatures, radiant heat from asphalt and equipment, prolonged sun exposure, and physically demanding work. Employers should evaluate heat exposure and implement appropriate heat-illness prevention measures.

Equipment-Specific Training Notice: Asphalt pavers vary significantly in controls, dimensions, conveyor systems, augers, screeds, hydraulic systems, safety devices, operating stations, and performance characteristics. Operators should receive instruction and familiarization appropriate to the specific equipment they are expected to operate.

Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of an A.R.G. classroom or knowledge-based training component does not by itself authorize an individual to operate an asphalt paver. Employers remain responsible for determining applicable requirements and ensuring equipment-specific instruction, practical training, evaluation, authorization, supervision, protective equipment, work-zone controls, energy-control procedures, and documentation appropriate to the equipment, task, and workplace.

Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Asphalt Paver Operator Safety Training program.

The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as an OSHA-issued credential, governmental operator license, or governmental certification.
