601 – Hot Work Safety (General Industry)

Hot Work Safety training for general industry personnel involved in or exposed to welding, cutting, brazing, grinding, heating, and other spark- or heat-producing operations.

Topics include hot work hazard recognition, fire prevention, hot work permits, fire watch responsibilities, compressed gas cylinders, welding and cutting equipment, ventilation, fumes and gases, PPE, combustible materials, and emergency procedures.

Training addresses applicable OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart Q requirements for welding, cutting, and brazing operations.

Completion of this training does not, by itself, authorize an individual to perform hot work or operate specific equipment. Employer-specific authorization, procedures, and additional training may be required.

Description

This training provides instruction on the recognition, evaluation, and control of hazards associated with hot work operations in general industry workplaces.

Hot work activities may include welding, cutting, brazing, soldering, grinding, heating, and other operations capable of producing flames, sparks, heat, or other ignition sources.

The course addresses common hot work hazards including fire and explosion hazards, combustible and flammable materials, compressed gas cylinders, oxygen and fuel-gas equipment, arc welding equipment, electrical hazards, sparks and hot slag, burns, toxic fumes and gases, ultraviolet and infrared radiation, ventilation, and hazardous atmospheres.

Training topics may include:

• Hot Work Hazard Recognition and Assessment
• Welding, Cutting, Brazing, Grinding, and Heating Operations
• Fire Prevention and Protection
• Combustible and Flammable Materials
• Hot Work Permits and Authorization Procedures
• Fire Watch Responsibilities
• Fire Extinguishing Equipment
• Oxygen and Fuel-Gas Cylinder Safety
• Cylinder Handling and Storage
• Regulators, Hoses, Torches, and Connections
• Arc Welding and Cutting Safety
• Resistance Welding Safety, when applicable
• Equipment Inspection and Safe Operation
• Electrical Safety
• Welding Fumes and Gases
• Ventilation Requirements
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Eye and Face Protection
• Protective Clothing and Gloves
• Respiratory Protection, when applicable
• Protection of Nearby Employees
• Confined or Enclosed Work Areas, when applicable
• Emergency Procedures
• Post-Work Inspection and Fire Monitoring

Particular attention is given to preventing fires and explosions. Before hot work begins, the work area should be evaluated for combustible materials, flammable substances, hazardous atmospheres, and other conditions that could allow heat, sparks, slag, or flame to create a hazardous condition.

Appropriate controls may include relocating or protecting combustible materials, using suitable barriers or screens, providing appropriate fire-extinguishing equipment, controlling hazardous atmospheres, and assigning properly instructed fire-watch personnel when required.

Applicable OSHA general industry requirements include 29 CFR 1910 Subpart Q – Welding, Cutting and Brazing:

• 1910.251 – Definitions
• 1910.252 – General Requirements
• 1910.253 – Oxygen-Fuel Gas Welding and Cutting
• 1910.254 – Arc Welding and Cutting
• 1910.255 – Resistance Welding

Additional OSHA requirements may apply depending on the workplace, equipment, materials, atmospheric conditions, employee exposures, and work activities.

This training is intended to supplement, not replace, the employer’s site-specific hot work program, permit procedures, fire prevention procedures, hazard assessments, equipment-specific training, manufacturer instructions, respiratory protection requirements, or other applicable safety procedures.

Completion of this course does not, by itself, authorize an individual to perform hot work, operate welding or cutting equipment, or serve as a fire watch. Employers remain responsible for determining employee competency, providing required task-specific training, and authorizing employees for their assigned duties.
