Description
This training provides instruction in laboratory safety and the recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical, physical, and other workplace hazards that may be encountered in laboratory environments.
The course addresses fundamental laboratory safety practices, including hazard identification, chemical handling and storage, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), chemical labeling, laboratory housekeeping, personal protective equipment (PPE), engineering controls, emergency equipment, exposure prevention, and safe work practices.
Participants will receive instruction on laboratory chemical hazards, routes of exposure, corrosive, toxic, reactive, flammable, and other hazardous substances, chemical compatibility, proper storage practices, spill prevention and response, laboratory ventilation, chemical fume hoods, eyewash stations, emergency showers, fire protection equipment, and appropriate PPE.
The training also addresses the importance of a facility-specific Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP), standard operating procedures, employee information and training, exposure-control measures, emergency procedures, chemical waste considerations, and maintaining laboratory equipment and work areas in a safe condition.
Individuals assigned safety oversight or competent person responsibilities should understand how to recognize existing and predictable hazards within the scope of their assigned duties and how to initiate appropriate corrective measures in accordance with employer procedures and their assigned authority.
Applicable requirements may include OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1450 – Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories, as well as other applicable OSHA standards based on the hazards, chemicals, equipment, and activities present in the laboratory.
This training is intended to supplement, not replace, the employer’s Chemical Hygiene Plan, laboratory-specific standard operating procedures, required chemical-specific training, equipment-specific training, emergency procedures, or other applicable regulatory requirements.
Completion of this course does not, by itself, designate or certify an individual as a Competent Person, Chemical Hygiene Officer, or Qualified Person. Any employer designation or assignment of specific safety responsibilities must be based on applicable regulatory requirements and the individual’s training, knowledge, experience, responsibilities, and authority.
