A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides Portable Light Tower Operator Safety Training designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely set up, operate, relocate, inspect, and shut down portable light towers used in construction, roadwork, emergency response, industrial operations, utilities, outdoor events, nighttime work, and other applicable workplaces.

Portable light towers can expose operators and nearby personnel to electrical hazards, overhead power lines, unstable setup conditions, elevated masts, high winds, pinch and crush points, generator systems, fuel, hot surfaces, carbon monoxide, noise, towing hazards, and unexpected equipment movement. This training program addresses equipment familiarization, pre-operation inspection, site selection, stabilization, mast deployment, lighting systems, electrical safety, generator operation awareness, towing and transport, emergency procedures, manufacturer requirements, and operator responsibilities.

Training Discipline: Portable Lighting, Temporary Power, Construction Equipment & Electrical Safety

Equipment: Portable Light Tower / Trailer-Mounted Light Tower / Engine-Driven Light Tower / Electric or Battery-Powered Light Tower, as Applicable

Training Format: Training may include formal instruction, demonstrations, practical equipment training, and evaluation of operator performance, as applicable.

Practical Training: Practical training should be appropriate to the specific portable light tower the participant is expected to operate. Training should address controls, stabilizers, outriggers, mast systems, lighting fixtures, generator or electrical systems, emergency shutdown, setup and lowering procedures, towing components, and actual workplace conditions.

Stability & Mast Safety Notice: An elevated light-tower mast can significantly affect equipment stability. Ground conditions, leveling, stabilizer or outrigger deployment, mast height, wind, weather, and manufacturer operating limitations should be evaluated before and during operation.

Power-Line Safety Notice: Elevated masts and lighting assemblies can contact or approach energized overhead power lines. Operators should identify electrical hazards before setup and maintain applicable clearances and protective measures.

Electrical Safety Notice: Portable light towers may incorporate generators, receptacles, electrical cables, lighting circuits, batteries, and temporary-power components. Damaged electrical components, improper connections, wet conditions, inadequate protection, or improper grounding or bonding can create shock, electrocution, fire, and equipment-damage hazards.

Generator Backfeed Notice: A portable generator or light tower should not be connected to a building or electrical system in a manner that can energize utility wiring or create backfeed unless an appropriate transfer system and installation have been provided in accordance with applicable electrical requirements.

Carbon Monoxide Notice: Fuel-powered engines produce carbon monoxide, an odorless and potentially fatal gas. Engine-driven light towers should not be operated in enclosed or inadequately ventilated locations where exhaust can accumulate or enter occupied areas.

Wind & Weather Notice: High winds and severe weather can destabilize an elevated light tower. Operators should follow the manufacturer’s wind limitations and lowering or shutdown procedures when conditions become unsafe.

Towing Notice: Towing a trailer-mounted light tower may require an appropriate tow vehicle, hitch, coupling system, safety chains, lighting, braking equipment, driver qualification, and other requirements depending on equipment weight and jurisdiction. Completion of this course does not replace any driver’s license, CDL, endorsement, vehicle registration, inspection, or other credential that may be required.

Equipment-Specific Training Notice: Portable light towers vary significantly in mast design, stabilizers, outriggers, generator capacity, electrical systems, lighting technology, controls, batteries, towing configuration, safety devices, and operating limitations. Operators should receive instruction and familiarization appropriate to the specific equipment they are expected to operate.

Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of an A.R.G. classroom or knowledge-based training component does not by itself authorize an individual to operate a portable light tower. Employers remain responsible for determining applicable requirements and ensuring equipment-specific instruction, practical training, evaluation, authorization, electrical-safety controls, site-specific procedures, protective equipment, and documentation appropriate to the equipment, task, and workplace.

Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Portable Light Tower Operator Safety Training program.

The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as an OSHA-issued credential, electrician license, governmental operator license, CDL, or governmental certification.
