Description
This training provides chemical hazard and toxic substance safety instruction for personnel working in construction environments, including individuals who may be assigned responsibilities associated with competent person duties.
The course addresses the recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical and toxic substance hazards that may be encountered on construction sites. Topics may include routes of exposure, health effects, hazardous chemicals, toxic substances, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), chemical labeling, Hazard Communication, occupational exposure awareness, personal protective equipment (PPE), respiratory hazards, engineering controls, administrative controls, safe handling and storage, and emergency procedures.
Participants will receive instruction on recognizing chemical hazards, reviewing labels and Safety Data Sheets, identifying potential exposure conditions, understanding appropriate protective measures, maintaining proper storage and segregation of chemicals, and supporting corrective actions when hazardous conditions are identified.
The course may also address construction-related exposures involving dusts, fumes, vapors, gases, solvents, coatings, adhesives, cleaning chemicals, welding and cutting operations, and other potentially hazardous substances encountered during construction activities.
Additional emphasis may be placed on exposure prevention, ventilation, respiratory protection awareness, spill and release procedures, decontamination considerations, and coordination with the employer’s site-specific safety and health programs.
This training is intended to supplement, not replace, an employer’s site-specific Hazard Communication Program, respiratory protection program, exposure-control procedures, Safety Data Sheets, manufacturer instructions, substance-specific training, medical surveillance requirements, or other training required for assigned work.
Completion of this course does not, by itself, designate an individual as a Competent Person, Qualified Person, hazardous materials technician, emergency responder, or other specialized role. Employer designation, authorization, training, knowledge, experience, and demonstrated ability must be appropriate to the individual’s assigned responsibilities.
Applicable requirements may include OSHA 29 CFR 1926.59 – Hazard Communication, 29 CFR 1926 Subpart Z – Toxic and Hazardous Substances, and other applicable construction safety and health requirements.
