Description
This training provides instruction in the recognition of fire hazards and the selection, inspection, placement, and safe use of portable fire extinguishers in construction and workplace environments.
The course addresses basic fire-safety principles, common workplace fire hazards, fire prevention, emergency response considerations, classes of fire, extinguisher classifications, extinguisher limitations, and the importance of selecting the appropriate extinguisher for the type of fire hazard present.
Participants will receive instruction on portable fire extinguisher components, labels and markings, accessibility, mounting and placement considerations, visual inspections, damaged or discharged extinguishers, maintaining clear access, and recognizing conditions that may require an extinguisher to be removed from service or referred for maintenance.
Training topics may include Class A, B, C, D, and K fire hazards as applicable; common extinguishing agents; extinguisher operating principles; appropriate evacuation considerations; emergency notification; maintaining a safe escape route; and recognizing when a fire is beyond the incipient stage and should not be fought with a portable extinguisher.
Where employees are expected or authorized to use portable fire extinguishers, training should be consistent with the employer’s emergency procedures, fire-prevention program, assigned employee responsibilities, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Individuals assigned competent person or safety oversight responsibilities should be capable of recognizing existing and predictable fire hazards within the scope of their assigned duties and understand the corrective measures necessary to address unsafe conditions in accordance with employer procedures and their assigned authority.
Applicable requirements may include OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157 – Portable Fire Extinguishers and, for construction activities, applicable provisions of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart F – Fire Protection and Prevention. Additional requirements may apply depending on the workplace, fire hazards, emergency procedures, and employee responsibilities.
This training is intended to supplement, not replace, employer-specific fire-prevention and emergency-action procedures, required hands-on instruction or equipment familiarization, extinguisher inspection and maintenance requirements, site-specific emergency procedures, or other applicable regulatory requirements.
Completion of this course does not, by itself, designate or certify an individual as a Competent Person, Qualified Person, firefighter, fire inspector, or fire-extinguisher service technician. Employer designation, authorization, applicable training, knowledge, experience, and appropriate authority must be consistent with the individual’s assigned responsibilities.
