A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides Concrete Saw Operator Safety Training designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely operate concrete-cutting equipment used in construction, demolition, roadway work, utility installation, concrete repair, masonry work, and other applicable operations.

Concrete-cutting operations can expose operators and nearby personnel to rotating blades, blade failure, kickback, flying debris, respirable crystalline silica, excessive noise, vibration, electrical hazards, fuel-powered equipment, water, underground utilities, pinch points, and other serious hazards. This training program addresses equipment familiarization, pre-operation inspection, blade selection and inspection, machine guarding, cutting techniques, silica exposure controls, utility hazards, personal protective equipment, manufacturer requirements, and operator responsibilities.

Training Discipline: Concrete Cutting, Silica Exposure Control, Construction Equipment & Power Tool Safety

Equipment: Walk-Behind Concrete Saw / Road Saw / Flat Saw / Handheld Cut-Off Saw / Wall Saw / Ring Saw / Concrete-Cutting Equipment, as Applicable

Training Format: Training may include formal instruction, demonstrations, practical equipment training, and evaluation of operator performance, as applicable.

Practical Training: Practical training should be appropriate to the specific concrete saw the participant is expected to operate. Training should address controls, blade selection and installation, guards, water or dust-control systems, cutting techniques, reactive forces, utilities, shutdown procedures, and actual workplace conditions.

Blade Safety Notice: Concrete saw blades operate at high rotational speeds and can cause severe or fatal injuries. Operators should use blades compatible with the equipment, material, blade diameter, arbor, and operating speed and should inspect blades and related components before use.

Kickback & Reactive-Force Notice: Blade binding, improper cutting position, damaged blades, excessive pressure, twisting, or contact with certain materials can create sudden reactive forces or kickback. Operators should follow the saw and blade manufacturer’s instructions and maintain appropriate control and body positioning.

Machine Guarding Notice: Required blade guards and other protective devices should remain properly installed, adjusted, and functional. Equipment should not be operated with required guards removed or defeated.

Silica Safety Notice: Cutting concrete, masonry, brick, block, stone, or similar materials can generate respirable crystalline silica. Employers are responsible for determining applicable exposure-control requirements and implementing required engineering controls, work practices, respiratory protection, housekeeping, training, and other protective measures.

Respiratory Protection Notice: When respiratory protection is required, employers are responsible for implementing the applicable respiratory-protection program, including medical evaluation, fit testing, training, respirator selection, use, and maintenance.

Utility & Structural Hazard Notice: Concrete may contain electrical conductors, plumbing, gas lines, reinforcing steel, post-tension cables, or other embedded systems. Cutting can also affect structural integrity or create falling-material hazards. Applicable plans, utility information, scanning or locating methods, and engineering or competent-person controls should be addressed before cutting where necessary.

Carbon Monoxide Notice: Fuel-powered concrete saws and engines can produce carbon monoxide. Fuel-powered equipment should not be operated in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas unless exposure hazards have been appropriately evaluated and controlled.

Equipment-Specific Training Notice: Concrete saws vary significantly in power source, blade type, speed, size, guarding, water-delivery systems, dust controls, cutting applications, and operating characteristics. Operators should receive instruction and familiarization appropriate to the specific equipment they are expected to use.

Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of an A.R.G. classroom or knowledge-based training component does not by itself authorize an individual to operate concrete-cutting equipment. Employers remain responsible for determining applicable requirements and ensuring equipment-specific instruction, practical training, evaluation, authorization, silica exposure controls, respiratory protection where required, utility verification, protective equipment, and documentation appropriate to the equipment, task, and workplace.

Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Concrete Saw Operator Safety Training program.

The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as an OSHA-issued credential, governmental operator license, or governmental certification.
