A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides Snowplow / Snow Removal Equipment Operator Safety Training designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely operate snowplows and powered snow-removal equipment used at construction sites, industrial facilities, commercial properties, parking areas, roadways, airports, warehouses, distribution centers, and other applicable workplaces.

Snow-removal operations can expose operators and nearby personnel to limited visibility, slippery surfaces, traffic, pedestrians, hidden obstacles, equipment rollovers, backing hazards, overhead and underground utilities, moving attachments, hydraulic systems, extreme weather, and other hazards. This training program addresses equipment familiarization, pre-operation inspection, plow and attachment safety, winter driving, snow-removal techniques, visibility, traffic control, pedestrian protection, equipment stability, weather conditions, manufacturer requirements, and operator responsibilities.

Training Discipline: Snow Removal, Winter Operations & Mobile Equipment Safety

Equipment: Snowplow / Snow Pusher / Snow Blower / Snow Removal Vehicle / Loader or Skid Steer Snow Attachment / Salt or Sand Spreader, as Applicable

Training Format: Training may include formal instruction, demonstrations, practical equipment training, and evaluation of operator performance, as applicable.

Practical Training: Practical training should be appropriate to the specific vehicle, carrier machine, plow, snow-removal attachment, or spreading equipment the participant is expected to operate. Training should address controls, visibility, attachments, braking, steering, workplace routes, slopes, pedestrians, traffic, weather conditions, and other equipment-specific operating characteristics.

Winter Driving Safety Notice: Snow, ice, freezing precipitation, reduced visibility, and low temperatures can significantly affect vehicle traction, steering, braking, and stopping distance. Operators should adjust speed and operating practices to actual conditions and equipment limitations.

Backing & Pedestrian Safety Notice: Snow-removal equipment frequently operates in parking lots, loading areas, roadways, and facilities occupied by pedestrians and other vehicles. Operators should maintain appropriate visibility, speed, separation, communication, and backing practices for the workplace.

Hidden-Obstacle Notice: Snow can conceal curbs, islands, bollards, hydrants, drainage structures, parking stops, landscaping, drop-offs, utilities, debris, and other obstacles. Whenever practicable, snow-removal routes and work areas should be evaluated before significant accumulation obscures these hazards.

Attachment Safety Notice: Snowplows, pushers, blowers, spreaders, and other attachments can change equipment weight distribution, visibility, dimensions, stability, hydraulic requirements, and operating characteristics. Attachments should be compatible with the carrier equipment and operated within manufacturer limitations.

Snow Blower Safety Notice: Snow blowers may contain high-speed augers, impellers, and discharge systems capable of causing severe injury or ejecting debris. Operators should never use hands or feet to clear an obstruction and should follow manufacturer shutdown and energy-control procedures before accessing hazardous components.

Deicing Material Notice: Salt, sand, and chemical deicing products may create dust, skin or eye exposure, corrosion, environmental, and housekeeping hazards. Operators should follow product labels, Safety Data Sheets, manufacturer instructions, and workplace procedures.

Cold Stress Notice: Outdoor winter operations can expose workers to cold stress, wind chill, wet clothing, fatigue, and reduced dexterity. Employers should evaluate environmental conditions and implement appropriate protective measures for employees exposed to cold environments.

Equipment-Specific Training Notice: Snow-removal equipment varies significantly in controls, attachments, steering, braking, dimensions, capacities, hydraulic systems, safety devices, and operating characteristics. Operators should receive instruction and familiarization appropriate to the specific equipment they are expected to operate.

Driver Qualification Notice: This training does not replace a driver’s license, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), endorsement, medical qualification, or other credential that may be required for operation of a particular vehicle on public roadways or under applicable jurisdictional requirements.

Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of an A.R.G. classroom or knowledge-based training component does not by itself authorize an individual to operate snow-removal equipment. Employers remain responsible for determining applicable requirements and ensuring equipment-specific instruction, practical training, evaluation, authorization, supervision, vehicle qualification, protective equipment, and documentation appropriate to the equipment, task, and workplace.

Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Snowplow / Snow Removal Equipment Operator Safety Training program.

The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as an OSHA-issued credential, governmental operator license, CDL, or governmental certification.
