1523 – Vacuum Excavator Operator Safety Training
A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides Vacuum Excavator Operator Safety Training designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely operate vacuum excavation equipment used for utility locating, potholing, daylighting, excavation, debris removal, and other construction and industrial applications.
This training program addresses equipment familiarization, pre-operation inspection, vacuum systems, excavation hazards, underground utilities, spoil tanks, hoses, high-vacuum hazards, vehicle positioning, traffic and pedestrian exposure, manufacturer requirements, and operator responsibilities. Practical operator evaluation may be provided when applicable and when suitable equipment is available.

Training Discipline: Vacuum Excavation & Mobile Equipment Operator Safety
Equipment: Vacuum Excavator / Truck-Mounted or Trailer-Mounted Vacuum Excavation Equipment, as Applicable
Training Format: Instructor-led classroom and/or online instruction with practical equipment training and operator evaluation as applicable.
Practical Training: When provided as part of operator qualification, hands-on training should address the specific vacuum excavator, controls, vacuum system, hoses, boom, debris tank, hydraulic systems, operating characteristics, limitations, and hazards associated with the equipment the participant is expected to operate.
Operator Evaluation: Practical evaluation, when required by the employer, project, manufacturer instructions, or applicable requirements, should be performed using equipment representative of the type the participant will operate and under representative workplace conditions.
Underground Utility Safety Notice: Vacuum excavation can reduce certain risks associated with exposing underground utilities, but it does not eliminate utility hazards. Applicable utility-location, excavation, electrical, gas, and site-control requirements should be addressed before excavation begins.
Excavation Safety Notice: Vacuum excavation equipment does not eliminate excavation or trench hazards. Employers remain responsible for evaluating excavation conditions and implementing applicable protective systems, access, inspections, competent-person functions, and other required controls.
Vacuum Hazard Notice: High-vacuum systems can create serious suction, hose-control, flying-material, stored-energy, and equipment hazards. Personnel should remain clear of vacuum inlets and other hazardous operating areas and follow manufacturer instructions and established safe work procedures.
Debris Tank Safety Notice: Debris tanks, tailgates, dumping systems, and raised components can create crushing, struck-by, hydraulic, and stored-energy hazards. Required supports, isolation procedures, exclusion zones, and manufacturer procedures should be followed during dumping, cleaning, inspection, and maintenance.
Driver Qualification Notice: When vacuum excavation equipment is mounted on or transported by a commercial motor vehicle, this training does not replace any driver’s license, CDL, endorsement, medical qualification, or other credential required for operation of the vehicle.
Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of this A.R.G. training program does not by itself authorize an individual to operate vacuum excavation equipment. Employers remain responsible for ensuring operators are appropriately trained, familiarized, evaluated, authorized, and competent for the specific equipment, vehicle, tasks, utilities, hazards, and workplace conditions involved.
Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Vacuum Excavator Operator Safety Training program.
The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as a governmental operator license, CDL, or other governmental credential.
