A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides Ride-On Trowel Operator Safety Training designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely operate ride-on power trowels used for finishing, floating, smoothing, and polishing concrete surfaces in commercial, industrial, roadway, warehouse, slab-on-grade, and other applicable concrete construction operations.

Ride-on trowel operations can expose operators and nearby personnel to rotating blades, moving equipment, pinch and crush points, unexpected machine movement, loss of control, slips and falls, noise, vibration, fuel and electrical hazards, carbon monoxide, wet concrete, and other serious hazards. This training program addresses equipment familiarization, pre-operation inspection, safe startup and shutdown, steering and maneuvering, blade and pan systems, concrete-finishing operations, work-area controls, manufacturer requirements, and operator responsibilities.

Training Discipline: Concrete Finishing, Powered Equipment & Construction Safety

Equipment: Ride-On Power Trowel / Double-Rotor Trowel / Concrete Finishing Trowel / Ride-On Concrete Finishing Machine, as Applicable

Training Format: Training may include formal instruction, demonstrations, practical equipment training, and evaluation of operator performance, as applicable.

Practical Training: Practical training should be appropriate to the specific ride-on trowel the participant is expected to operate. Training should address controls, steering, startup and shutdown, blade or pan systems, blade pitch, maneuvering, stopping, concrete-finishing procedures, slab edges, openings, pedestrian hazards, emergency controls, and actual workplace conditions.

Rotating Equipment Safety Notice: Trowel blades, pans, spider assemblies, drive components, and other rotating parts can cause severe injuries. Operators and other personnel should remain clear of rotating components and should not bypass or remove required guards or safety devices.

Slab Edge & Opening Safety Notice: Ride-on trowels can move unexpectedly or travel rapidly enough to create serious hazards near slab edges, floor openings, penetrations, elevator shafts, excavations, and other drop-offs. Work areas should be evaluated and appropriate protective measures established before operation.

Wet Concrete Safety Notice: Wet concrete and cement-containing materials can cause skin irritation, serious chemical burns, and eye injuries. Appropriate personal protective equipment and hygiene practices should be used based on the work being performed.

Carbon Monoxide Notice: Internal-combustion engines produce carbon monoxide, an odorless and potentially fatal gas. Fuel-powered ride-on trowels should not be operated in enclosed or inadequately ventilated areas unless carbon-monoxide exposure has been appropriately evaluated and controlled.

Ventilation Notice: Opening doors or using general building ventilation may not by itself adequately control carbon-monoxide exposure. Employers should evaluate the work environment and implement appropriate equipment selection, ventilation, monitoring, work practices, or other controls as necessary.

Energy-Control Notice: Personnel should not reach beneath the machine, contact blades, replace pans or blades, clear obstructions, remove guards, or perform maintenance unless the equipment has been appropriately shut down, secured against unexpected movement or startup, and hazardous energy controlled.

Equipment-Specific Training Notice: Ride-on trowels vary in size, steering systems, power source, controls, blade configurations, safety devices, operating speed, and handling characteristics. Operators should receive instruction and familiarization appropriate to the specific equipment they are expected to operate.

Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of an A.R.G. classroom or knowledge-based training component does not by itself authorize an individual to operate a ride-on trowel. Employers remain responsible for determining applicable requirements and ensuring equipment-specific instruction, practical training, evaluation, authorization, supervision, ventilation and exposure controls, protective equipment, and documentation appropriate to the equipment, task, and workplace.

Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Ride-On Trowel Operator Safety Training program.

The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as an OSHA-issued credential, governmental operator license, or governmental certification.
