Training Discipline: Pipeline Construction, Pipe Handling, Hydraulic Equipment & Heavy Equipment Safety

Equipment: Hydraulic Pipe Bender / Pipeline Bending Machine / Cold Pipe Bending Machine / Pipe-Bending Equipment, as Applicable

Training Format: Training may include formal instruction, demonstrations, practical equipment training, and evaluation of operator performance, as applicable.

Practical Training: Practical training should be appropriate to the specific pipe bender the participant is expected to operate. Training should address controls, hydraulic systems, dies or shoes, clamps, pipe supports, pipe positioning, bending sequence, exclusion zones, communication, energy-isolation points, and actual workplace conditions.

Pinch & Crush Hazard Notice: Pipe-bending machines develop substantial force and contain multiple pinch, crush, shear, and caught-between areas. Operators and ground personnel should keep hands and body parts clear of bending components, clamps, dies, supports, rollers, and moving pipe.

Stored-Energy Notice: Bent pipe, hydraulic cylinders, pressurized lines, machine components, and supported loads may contain significant stored energy. Pipe can shift, roll, spring back, or move unexpectedly. Personnel should remain outside established hazardous zones and follow manufacturer procedures.

Hydraulic Safety Notice: Hydraulic systems can operate at pressures capable of causing serious injury. Suspected hydraulic leaks should not be checked with bare hands. Equipment should be appropriately shut down, pressure relieved, and hazardous energy controlled before applicable maintenance or servicing.

Pipe Support Notice: Pipe should be appropriately supported and controlled throughout loading, positioning, bending, and unloading. Inadequate support can allow pipe to roll, drop, shift, or create dangerous movement at the opposite end of the pipe.

Rigging & Suspended Load Notice: Pipe-bending operations may involve cranes, sidebooms, excavators, forklifts, telehandlers, or other equipment used to handle pipe. Personnel should remain clear of suspended loads and hazardous fall zones. Rigging-awareness content in this course does not by itself qualify or certify a participant as a qualified rigger.

Signal Person Notice: Communication and hand-signal awareness provided during this course does not by itself qualify or certify a participant as a signal person where separate qualification requirements apply.

Energy-Control Notice: Personnel should not enter hazardous machine areas, remove guards, replace dies or shoes, clear jams, adjust dangerous components, or perform servicing unless the equipment has been appropriately shut down, secured, and hazardous energy controlled according to applicable procedures.

Equipment-Specific Training Notice: Pipe-bending machines vary significantly in capacity, controls, dies, clamps, hydraulic systems, pipe-size limitations, support arrangements, safety devices, and operating procedures. Operators should receive instruction and familiarization appropriate to the specific equipment and pipe they are expected to handle.

Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of an A.R.G. classroom or knowledge-based training component does not by itself authorize an individual to operate a pipe bender. Employers remain responsible for determining applicable requirements and ensuring equipment-specific instruction, practical training, evaluation, authorization, supervision, lifting and rigging qualifications where required, hazardous-energy control, protective equipment, and documentation appropriate to the equipment, task, and workplace.

Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Pipe Bender Operator Safety Training program.

The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as an OSHA-issued credential, governmental operator license, qualified-rigger certification, signal-person qualification, or governmental certification.
