A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health provides Stump Grinder Operator Safety Training designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely operate stump grinders and similar powered grinding equipment used in tree care, landscaping, storm cleanup, grounds maintenance, utility work, vegetation management, and other applicable operations.

Stump grinders contain high-speed rotating cutting wheels capable of ejecting wood, rocks, metal, and other debris with significant force. This training program addresses equipment familiarization, pre-operation inspection, cutting-wheel hazards, machine guarding, work-area preparation, underground utility awareness, safe grinding procedures, pedestrian protection, flying-debris hazards, stability, transport, hazardous-energy control, manufacturer requirements, and operator responsibilities.

Training Discipline: Stump Grinding, Tree-Care Equipment & Machine Safety

Equipment: Stump Grinder / Walk-Behind Stump Grinder / Self-Propelled Stump Grinder / Tracked Stump Grinder / Tow-Behind Stump Grinder, as Applicable

Training Format: Training may include formal instruction, demonstrations, practical equipment training, and evaluation of operator performance, as applicable.

Practical Training: Practical training should be appropriate to the specific stump grinder the participant is expected to operate. Training should address controls, positioning, stability, cutting-wheel operation, safety devices, work-area hazards, underground utilities, transport, shutdown procedures, and other equipment-specific operating characteristics.

Cutting-Wheel Safety Notice: Stump-grinder cutting wheels rotate at high speed and can cause severe or fatal injury. Operators should remain in the manufacturer-designated operating position, maintain required guards and shields, keep personnel outside hazardous areas, and never approach the cutting wheel until the machine has been shut down and all motion has stopped.

Thrown-Object Safety Notice: Stump grinders can eject wood, stones, metal, soil, and other debris at high velocity. The work area should be inspected before grinding, bystanders should be kept clear, and appropriate guarding, positioning, and personal protective equipment should be used.

Underground Utility Safety Notice: Stumps and roots may be located near buried electrical, gas, communications, irrigation, water, sewer, or other utility systems. Required utility locating and site-control procedures should be completed before grinding or disturbing the ground where underground utilities may be present.

Energy-Control Notice: Operators should not perform maintenance, clear hazardous obstructions, replace cutting components, or enter dangerous areas unless the machine has been appropriately shut down and hazardous energy has been controlled in accordance with applicable procedures.

Rotating Component Notice: The cutting wheel and other rotating components can continue moving after power is shut off. Operators and maintenance personnel should allow all components to come to a complete stop before approaching hazardous areas.

Respiratory Protection Notice: Grinding operations can generate wood dust, soil dust, mold, or other airborne contaminants. Where respiratory protection is necessary for occupational exposure, employers should determine applicable respiratory-protection requirements and provide the required program, medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and equipment as applicable.

Equipment-Specific Training Notice: Stump grinders vary significantly in controls, cutting systems, drive systems, tracks or wheels, guarding, capacities, safety devices, and operating characteristics. Operators should receive instruction and familiarization appropriate to the specific equipment they are expected to operate.

Employer Responsibility Notice: Completion of an A.R.G. classroom or knowledge-based training component does not by itself authorize an individual to operate a stump grinder. Employers remain responsible for determining applicable requirements and ensuring equipment-specific instruction, practical training, evaluation, authorization, supervision, protective equipment, utility controls, energy-control procedures, and documentation appropriate to the equipment, task, and workplace.

Training Certificate: Participants who successfully complete applicable training and evaluation requirements may receive an A.R.G. Construction, Safety & Health Certificate of Training documenting completion of the Stump Grinder Operator Safety Training program.

The certificate documents training completed and should not be represented as an OSHA-issued credential, governmental operator license, arborist certification, or governmental certification.
