Trenching Competent Person Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Excavation &amp; Trenching Competent Person Training<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Excavation &amp; Trenching Competent Person Training<\/strong> program provides advanced training for supervisors, foremen, safety personnel, and other individuals who may be assigned responsibilities associated with excavation and trenching operations.<\/p>\n<p>This program focuses on hazard recognition, soil classification, protective systems, excavation inspections, changing site conditions, access and egress, underground installations, water accumulation, hazardous atmospheres, mobile equipment, and the responsibilities and authority associated with the Competent Person role.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Program Objectives<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Upon successful completion of this program, participants should be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understand applicable excavation and trenching requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize existing and predictable excavation hazards.<\/li>\n<li>Identify conditions that may create cave-in or soil-instability hazards.<\/li>\n<li>Understand basic soil classification principles and testing methods.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize soil types and conditions affecting protective-system selection.<\/li>\n<li>Understand sloping and benching principles.<\/li>\n<li>Understand shoring and shielding protective systems.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize appropriate use and limitations of trench boxes and other protective systems.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate safe access and egress arrangements.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize underground utility and installation hazards.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate spoil-pile and material-placement hazards.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize mobile equipment, falling-load, and struck-by hazards.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize water accumulation and changing excavation conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate potential hazardous atmosphere conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Understand applicable atmospheric testing and protective measures.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct and document applicable excavation safety inspections.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize conditions requiring employees to be removed from the hazardous area.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the responsibilities and authority associated with the employer-designated Competent Person.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Major Training Areas<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Competent Person Responsibilities \u2022 Excavation Hazard Recognition \u2022 Cave-In Prevention \u2022 Soil Classification \u2022 Visual &amp; Manual Soil Analysis \u2022 Protective Systems \u2022 Sloping \u2022 Benching \u2022 Shoring \u2022 Shielding \u2022 Trench Boxes \u2022 Access &amp; Egress \u2022 Underground Installations \u2022 Spoil Piles \u2022 Mobile Equipment \u2022 Falling Loads \u2022 Water Accumulation \u2022 Hazardous Atmospheres \u2022 Atmospheric Testing Awareness \u2022 Excavation Inspections \u2022 Changing Conditions \u2022 Corrective Actions<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Regulatory Reference<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This training addresses applicable requirements and safety principles associated with <strong>OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P \u2013 Excavations<\/strong>, including 29 CFR 1926.650, 1926.651, 1926.652, and applicable appendices addressing soil classification, sloping, benching, timber shoring, and protective systems.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Competent Person Responsibilities<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Under applicable OSHA excavation requirements, a Competent Person must be capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions that are hazardous, unsanitary, or dangerous to employees and must have authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them.<\/p>\n<p>The Competent Person has important responsibilities related to excavation inspections and must evaluate applicable conditions before employees are exposed to excavation hazards and as conditions change.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Recommended For<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Supervisors \u2022 Foremen \u2022 Construction Managers \u2022 Safety Personnel \u2022 Utility Supervisors \u2022 Excavation Crew Leaders \u2022 Site Safety Representatives \u2022 Contractors \u2022 Individuals Who May Be Designated by Their Employer as an Excavation &amp; Trenching Competent Person<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Training Format<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Instructor-Led Training \u2022 Classroom and\/or Approved Training Environment \u2022 English or Spanish<\/p>\n<p>Practical exercises, soil-classification demonstrations, protective-system examples, inspection scenarios, or other hands-on activities may be incorporated when included within the applicable course delivery.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Certificate of Training<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Participants who successfully complete the applicable training requirements and required assessments may receive an <strong>A.R.G. Construction, Safety &amp; Health Certificate of Training.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Employer Designation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Successful completion of this training documents completion of the A.R.G. training program.
